What nobody tells people who are beginners
“What nobody tells people who are beginners — and I really wish someone had told this to me . . . is that all of us who do creative work, we get into it because we have good taste. But there is this gap. For the first couple years you make stuff, and it’s just not that good. It’s trying to be good, it has potential, but it’s not. But your taste, the thing that got you into the game, is still killer. And your taste is why your work disappoints you. A lot of people never get past this phase. They quit. Most people I know who do interesting, creative work went through years of this. We know our work doesn’t have this special thing that we want it to have. We all go through this. And if you are just starting out or you are still in this phase, you gotta know it’s normal and the most important thing you can do is do a lot of work. Put yourself on a deadline so that every week you will finish one story. It is only by going through a volume of work that you will close that gap, and your work will be as good as your ambitions. And I took longer to figure out how to do this than anyone I’ve ever met. It’s gonna take awhile. It’s normal to take awhile. You’ve just gotta fight your way through” Ira Glass

So so SO true! Everything I do I suck at I know I need practice to get good. This works for anything in my life. Long story short. Practice make perfect... I best relate it to my skateboarding. I practice and practice with very little out come. Then I look back to a year ago and see how far I have come. Too bad I'm still in that just not that good stage. I probably always will be. I also hate when I happy and think I'm good then some asshole just schools my ass. that's life. there will always be someone better than u and if you are the best somebodies chomping it to bits to pass u... Also this makes me want to paint. maybe it's the picture but I think I could really make some cool shit if I just put forth the effort. Like I should do one picture a week. most will suck like this quote says but there maybe glimmers of excellence. I won't know unless I try.
ReplyDeleteI also thought of painting with this! Perhaps we always move on to something new because we assume if it's meant to be, we will be AMAZING at it! I love what you said about some asshole schooling your ass. Thats the material you should have on your blog.
ReplyDeleteusually people r only amazing at something because they work at it. Not am interested in blogging and may try it some more. Humor or my trials in life would be a good topic for blogging but I do already do that on FB somewhat. Definitely not as much now that your not on it :/ ... Blogging is a form of expression. If I had a choice I would rather express myself in other way like painting or skateboarding....
ReplyDeleteCan u believe I quit? How long ago was that? I actually feel Freed, yet now I chain myself to this pointless blog that only me and you read. STUPID and waste of my time!
ReplyDeleteNot a waste time because us is who It's for! Idk what I would do of we couldnt hang at night. u better not quit! As I said I like doing this even if its just us. I like style, fashion, humor, and stuff u blog about. It gives us stuff to talk about and keeps our relationship fresh. I need to do more on my end. I know that. That's y I should blog on a topic that we both can relate to.
ReplyDeletelol u make this sound relationshipy..... I always like knowing ur opinion though.
ReplyDeleteNo! I didn't mean it that way. More friendshipy and I like hanging with u :)
